我本来不爱吃年糕,总嫌新鲜的年糕太黏,久放的又太干,怎么都不合胃口。小时候我的个子特别矮小,尤其到了青春发育期还是一个小不点,妈妈那时为了哄我吃年糕,跟我说吃了年糕寓意能够年年长高。
为了挑剔的我,妈妈不嫌麻烦,把在神台供奉足日的年糕切片,裹上蛋液下油锅煎,让原来不爱吃年糕的我瞬间就爱上它。尔后的春节里,妈妈总有办法把年糕变出不同花样,有时夹着番薯,有时夹着芋头,有时就简单的把年糕煎一煎就好。
爱上就爱上了,管它是放久变干的,还是新鲜出炉时黏黏的,我都吃得下。因为妈妈的巧手,让我对年糕改观了,也因为那时矮小的我有大大的执着,一心想要长高,不想每年班级列队时都排在最前头,所以我很努力吃年糕。
现在长大了,我每逢春节都要吃年糕。记得前三年在英国,没机会回家过节,有一次无意中和一位年长的同事东姐,聊起马来西亚的春节习俗。来自广东的她,已在英国落地生根,我没想到我只是随口说我爱吃年糕,下周她就蒸了一个小年糕给我。东姐的年糕和一般家喻户晓的口味不一样,那是我第一次品尝到姜汁红枣年糕,我还以为这是广东人的口味。原来不是。她说,亚洲的春节适逢是英国的冬天,因为我怕冷,吃姜和枣能暖身,当下听到她这么一说,瞬间暖心了。在异乡里被递上温情,即使没有家人陪伴,却不失温暖。
东姐说,做年糕不难,难的是要去抢购糯米粉,而且要趁早。在西方国家,每逢春节期间,华人超市的糯米粉特别畅销。之后的连续两年,她依然坚持给我做年糕,我真的很不好意思,就趁早买了几包糯米粉给东姐。既然她坚持为我做年糕,那我就贡献材料,免得她要特别赶去华人超市寻找。
虽然小吃年糕会长高,只是妈妈用来哄我吃年糕的话,但我当真了。随着年龄增长,我知道吃年糕的寓意是图个好意头。它就是个象征,让人们在热闹的春节里,对未来有美好的愿景。
